The US EPA advises arsenic levels should not be above 10 ppb/µg/l. The NJ DEP and various states recommend the maximum level of 5 ppb/ µg/l of arsenic in water. Make sure to ask when you schedule your test, what is the passing level in your area.
Lead
Lead in water, if left untreated, can cause reproductive problems in adults. Lead also poses risks to children such as behaviour problems, lower IQ, and potential death. Lead most often enters water through plumbing materials such as lead pipes.
VOCs
Volatile organic compounds, or VOCs, come from chemicals in common additives and extended exposure to these chemicals can damage the kidneys, liver and the central nervous system. These additives are used in commercial and industrial practices, as well as in household products like gasoline, cleaners, plastics, electronics and paints.
Nitrates
Nitrates in drinking water can have fatal effects for infants and pregnant women. Nitrates are formed by naturally occurring substances, nitrogen and oxygen, combining. Some high levels of nitrates that are found in drinking water are caused by construction, fertilizers and waste disposal.
