Many people can tell there is an issue with their drinking water by taste, smell, or appearance. However, there are some water contaminants that have no taste or odor. This is why testing yearly is crucial to maintaining good water quality.
Arsenic
Arsenic is a naturally occurring cancer causing element, if exposed long-term. It is also linked to cardiovascular disease and impaired cognitive development in adolescents. When this element is found in water sources it is not detected through smell, color, or taste and yearly testing is the only way to ensure arsenic levels do not reach dangerous levels in your water supply.
While the US EPA has set the maximum level of arsenic at 10 ppb/µg/l in water, the NJ DEP and other states have taken additional measures to lower the maximum level to 5 ppb/ µg/l of arsenic in water.
Lead
Lead can enter drinking water through plumbing materials, the most common being lead pipes. Lead can cause reproductive problems in adults and children are most vulnerable as lower levels of lead affect them more severely, leading to anemia, behaviour problems, lower IQ, and death. The maximum level of lead in water that does not have adverse health effects is set at zero by the EPA.
VOCs
Volatile organic compounds, also known as VOCs, are chemicals from common additives from commercial processes and everyday household products like gasoline, plastics, or electronics. Being exposed to VOCs can damage the kidneys, liver and the central nervous system.
Nitrates
Nitrates found in well water are from human activity such as construction, fertilizers and waste disposal. Nitrates in drinking water have heightened and potentially fatal health risks, especially for infants and pregnant women.
