More Vapor Intrusion:
|
Vapor intrusion is the migration of the volatile organic compounds
(VOCs) that have a high vapor pressure and low water solubility that are present in contaminated soils or
groundwater. Volatile organic compound are produced and used in the manufacture of the fuels, paints pharmaceuticals
and refrigerants. VOCs typically are industrial solvents, paints thinners, tetrachorethene (TCE) which is dry cleaning
fluid, fuel, oxygenates (MTBE), or by-products by chlorination in water treatment systems. This condition present a potential
for vapor migration throug the surface soils into surrounding buildings, thus potentially impacting the indoor air quality
and posing a health risk to the building inhabitants. This exposure is recieving increased attention, by regulators, in many states
and represents a significant liability risk for building owners in an evolving regulatory climate.
