The following checklists are adapted from the EPA Radon Testing Checklist for testing private residences.

Before Testing:
  • If someone other than the owner resides in the building, the owner must notify the occupants of the testing and provide written instructions detailing proper testing conditions.

  • Check to see if an active radon reduction system is already installed in the house. If so, make sure that the fan, if any, is operating for at least 24 hours before the beginning of the test.

  • When conducting short-term testing lasting less than 4 days, it is important to maintain closed-house conditions for at least 12 hours before beginning the test and for the entire duration of the test. This means keeping all windows closed, keeping doors closed except for normal entry and exit, and not operating fans or other machines that will bring in air from the outside. Fans that are part of a radon reduction system or small exhaust fans operating for only short periods of time may run during the test.

During Testing:
  • Maintain closed-house conditions during the entire duration of a short-term test, especially for tests shorter than four days in length.

  • Operate the home's heating and cooling systems normally during the test. For tests lasting less than one week, only operate air conditioning units which recirculate the interior air.

  • Do Not disturb the test device at any time during the test.

  • If a radon reduction system is in place, make sure that the system is working properly and will be in operation during the entire length of the radon test.

After Testing:
  • If you are the one retrieving the test kit, take care to properly handle, close, and seal the test device before shipping it to the RAdata lab.

  • Complete the form included with your radon test kit (Radon Test Kit Instruction Sheet).
