How to Conduct a Radon Test

1. Label

Before opening the canister, it is important to fill out the label. Follow the instructions provided with you test kit to properly complete the label and then continue to the next step.

 2. Remove Tape

Peel the sealing tape from around the canister to separate the two halves. Be careful not to tear the tape, as you will use the tape to reseal the canister after the test is complete.

3. Open Canister

Pull apart the two halves of the canister and place the lid on the bottom of the canister. Follow included instructions on how to prepare your test kit.

 4. Apply Tape

Wrap the sealing tape around the test kit to ensure that both halves stay together and that the sealing tape does not get lost or damaged through the course of the test.

5. Place Test Kit

Place the test kit in an appropriate place. Below is a list of pointers to refer to when deciding where to place your test. Also remember to keep closed-house conditions for 12 hours before the test and throughout the duration of the test. This means that all windows, doors and outside vents should be closed (except for normal exit and entry of the building), internal-external air exchange systems should be turned off (e.g., air conditioning), and any high volume attic fans, whole-house fans, or window fans should be turned off as well. Unless otherwise instructed, any radon mitigation system should be left running.

   In which room:
  • The test should be placed on the lowest level of the house that could be lived in without major changes to the room.
  • The room that you select should be one that is frequently occupied, such as a living room or bedroom.
  • A number of factors such as heating appliances and ventilation make bathrooms and kitchens poor testing locations.
   Where in the room:
  • Where it will not be disturbed.
  • Away from drafts caused by heating, ventilating and air conditioning, exterior doors, fans, and windows.
  • Away from heat and areas of high humidity.
  • At least 20 inches from the floor.
  • At least 3 feet from exterior doors, windows, and other potential openings to the outside.
  • At least 12 inches from exterior walls.
  • At least 4 inches from other objects.

 6. Close Canister

After the test period has elapsed (2-3 days for most testing canisters), close the test canister in the fashion that you recieved it and reapply tape to seal the seam.

7. Return to RAdata

Once sealed, the canister should be returned to RAdata within 48 hours. After analysis, RAdata will contact you regarding the results of your test.
